Dear Professionals,

Please join us this Friday, August 13, 2010 at the Simply Divine All White Affair networking/happy hour at Doc’s Place, hosted by the Divine Sororities of the Alumni National Pan-Hellenic Council.  Be sure to show your support as the Young Professionals educate the community about the need for African-American bone marrow donors.

You or someone you know may be affected by this serious problem.  Therefore, we encourage you to learn more about the issue that is challenging our community.  Here are a few facts:

• A patient in need of a transplant is most likely to find a compatible donor who is of their same ethnicity.
• There is more genetic variation in Africa than any other continent in the world.
• Most African Americans have mixed ancestry from different regions of Africa, which makes it even more difficult to trace ethnicity.
• Although nearly 35 million African / African Americans account for 13% of the U.S. population, they represent only 7% (600,000) of the national “Be The Match” Registry.
• Approximately 83% of African / African Americans will not receive the bone marrow transplant that can save their life.
• African / African Americans only have a 60% likelihood of finding at least one potential match, in comparison with 85% of all Caucasian patients.
• Just 42% of registered African / African Americans donate when requested, making them the group least available to donate if they are found to be a match.
